We Support ASHA Trust

ASHA Early Childhood DevelopmentASHA Trust works in poor communities where pre-school children are often left unattended during the day and at their most vulnerable.

Our programmes help to develop pre-school facilities that provide safe and stimulating environments. Children are given nourishing meals and benefit from learning programmes that prepare them for primary school.

The benefits of the programme to the communities in which ASHA works are manifold.

  • Children stand a much better chance in life having benefited from the correct nutrition to support their intellectual and physical growth
  • Structured environments prepare them for school and reduce the chance of failure later in life
  • Where unemployment is high, women are equipped with skills that allow them to earn a small income for their families while providing a service to the community.

James Heckman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist at the University of Chicago, has shown that investments in early childhood education pay for themselves and argues that they pay a return of 7 percent or more — better than many investments on Wall Street.

ASHA is a registered as a PBO with the Department of Social Development and has worked in the field of early childhood development in South Africa for over 70 years. The organization depends on fundraising from individuals and companies to work in the poorest of poor communities.

“Our goal is to improve access to quality early childhood care and education programmes for children in poorly resourced areas of South Africa.”
